    Core Web Vitals: What Google Actually Measures

    Google doesn't just measure "page speed" as a single metric. It uses three Core Web Vitals - each measuring a different aspect of the user experience:

    LCP - Largest Contentful Paint

    Target: < 2.5 seconds

    How long until the largest visible element (usually a hero image or heading) is fully loaded and visible. This is most users' perception of 'when the page loaded'. LCP over 4 seconds is classified as 'Poor'.

    FID - First Input Delay

    Target: < 100ms

    How long before the browser responds to the first user interaction (click, tap). A site that appears loaded but feels 'frozen' when you try to click anything has a high FID. Replaced by INP (Interaction to Next Paint) in 2024.

    CLS - Cumulative Layout Shift

    Target: < 0.1

    How much the page layout shifts around unexpectedly during loading. The frustrating experience of trying to tap a button and having it jump at the last moment is a CLS issue. Causes both poor UX and SEO penalties.

    Speed Fixes in Priority Order

    Address these in order. Each fix is listed with its typical impact on PageSpeed score:

    Compress and convert images to WebP/AVIF

    High

    Images are typically 60–80% of a page's total download size. Converting to WebP reduces file size by 30–50% with no visible quality loss.

    Upgrade to faster hosting (cloud or managed)

    Very High

    Cheap shared hosting is often the single biggest bottleneck. Moving to managed WordPress hosting (Kinsta, WP Engine) or cloud hosting can reduce TTFB by 80%.

    Enable browser caching and a CDN

    High

    Cloudflare's free plan serves your assets from servers close to your visitors and caches resources so returning visitors don't re-download everything.

    Defer non-critical JavaScript

    Medium-High

    JavaScript that isn't needed immediately on page load should be deferred - it blocks rendering and increases LCP.

    Remove unused plugins / CSS / JS

    Every inactive plugin still loads some code. Remove anything not actively contributing to the site.

    Set explicit width/height on all images
